The second day of UM iCamp 2019 was on 17 August 2019, in the same day of Indonesian Independence Day. After attending the Indonesian Independence Ceremony in Stadion Cakrawala Univeritas Negeri Malang, the UM iCamp 2019 participants went to the Office of International Affairs (OIA) hall to join the session of Indonesian for Beginners.

Started at 10.00 pm, the UM iCamp 2019 Participants were learning about Bahasa Indonesia in the hall of the Office of International Affairs of Universitas Negeri Malang (OIA UM). UM iCamp gave this opportunity to the participants to learn Bahasa Indonesia in the beginner level. The lecturer was Ahmad Baihaki (Mas Aki).

Mas Aki was presenting some facts about Indonesia, that is 250 million people of Indonesian, is the fastest growing economy, having more than 500 ethnic culture and 700 different languages, Indonesia is a beautiful country. Then, he gave explanation about Basic Logistic in Bahasa Indonesia (Letters in Bahasa Indonesia Alphabet, Letters Combination, Numbers, Time, Days of the Week). After the explanation, He gave a quiz to the participants. They visit the website of kahoot.it to do the quiz. Through the quiz, the participants should guess the numbers correctly in Bahasa Indonesia (some facts about Indonesian language, time in Bahasa Indonesia, days of the week, and some questions in Bahasa Indonesia).

The next session of Indonesian for Beginners is Greetings (for casual, formal, and both situation), Meeting Someone, Time Expression, Saying Goodbye, ‘Selamat’ (Selamat as a well-wishing, selamat + verb for activity, selamat + noun for occasions/events), Culture (handshake, kiss hand, bowing, goodbye, non-touching handshake), Introducing Yourself (Introduction, Conversation, Country Names in Bahasa Indonesia, Culture of politeness in asking about someone’s privacy, Pronouns (First Person, Second Person, Third Person), Possessive Pronouns, Negation (No/Not, Informal, WH-Questions and How, Asking Politely), At the Market (at, to, from; Bargaining), Verbs (Infinitive Verb, Bahasa Indonesia has no Tenses but still have time markers or indicators in the sentence), Signs and Warnings (Prohibition, Request, Warning), Language Construct Tips (Singular Noun to Plurals by repeating the word, Verb ‘To Be’ by omitting it, Adjective and Adverb).

Mas Aki also presented some videos about some culture facts in Indonesia of each topics such as politeness and some common facts in Indonesian society in speaking Bahasa Indonesia. The participants were asked to imitate how to speak the examples in Bahasa Indonesia. In pairs, they were trying to do the conversation in Bahasa Indonesia by reading some texts given.

Broaden Your Vistas, Elevate Your Global Endeavour. This session will enhance the participants’ skill in speaking Bahasa Indonesia. By learning Bahasa Indonesia, they will get to know more about Indonesia eventually. Moreover, in UM iCamp 2019, they meet new people from other countries and hear new languages. By learning new languages, they will get to learn new culture and will raise their global awareness as the next generation of the world.
