One of Foreign Students from UM Won in Indonesian Speech Contest in University of Muhammadiyah Malang

Indonesian speech contest was an event held by Bahasa Indonesia untuk Penutur Asing (BIPA) in Muhammadiyah University of Malang (UMM) on Tuesday, May 12th 2015. The participants of this contest were students from Korea, China, Al-Jazeera, Thailand, Madagascar and many others. All of them are currently studying Bahasa Indonesia under Dharmasiswa Program in some campuses in Malang, such as State University of Malang, Muhammadiyah University of Malang, Brawijaya University, and Boedi Utomo University.

In this contest UM had prepared and sent two foreign students as the delegates. Seong Min Nam from South Korea and Radya from Alzerbaijan were chosen to be the representative from UM delivering their Indonesian speech. In the first preliminary round, Radya lose so that Nam was the single UM fighter. In the next round Nam delivered a very good and interesting speech which then brought her as the second winner in this contest.

Some of IRO UM staffs who accompany her in the contest claimed that Nam deserved to be one of the winners since she delivered her speech using a brief, simple, and understandable language. In her speech Nam told the audiences her experiences during studying in Indonesia. She also commented on how friendly the Indonesian people are. “Indonesian people are so friendly and they hospitalize us (foreigners) very well thus it is easy for us to communicate with them.”, said Nam.

The BIPA tutors hard work in teaching Indonesian for the foreign students are the key of this success. There is a hope for every foreign student learning Indonesian in UM to join with this kind of contest. It is a very good chance for foreign students to show and practice their ability of communicating using Indonesia in front of public.
