BIPA

Background

Center for Indonesian Studies (CIS) BIPA at Faculty of Letters State University of Malang (Universitas Negeri Malang), in its approach to teaching Indonesian to foreigners, aims to cultivate a balance of speaking and writing competence both in formal and colloquial Indonesian. The formal variant is essential for reading or interchange with officials and educated people generally. The colloquial Indonesian offered in lessons is understood by most speakers of the languange even when their variants differ.

Emphasis during the first few weeks of the instruction is on oral learning. Insofar as possible Indonesian is the exclusive language in the classroom. This communicative and integrated approach begins with everydau exchanges of real life-situations students encounter in streets, stores, offices, and on buses or trains, and not less important at the indonesian homes they live in. Students are individually guided by peer-tutor to activate classroom learning in living situations. Grammar, reading, and vocabulary drill are brought in early, only after students have the capacity to actively engage in Indonesia.

Types of Programs

CIS-BIPA Faculty of Letters, State University od Malang, offers five courses: regular courses of the collaborative program, regular courses of non-collaborative program, non-regular courses, elective courses of pracrtical arts, and courses for teachers of Indonesian as a foreign language.

Regular courses of the collaborative program are courses run by CIS-BIPA in collaboration with both home and overseas institutions, such as COTI (The Consortium of Teaching Indonesian) and CSC (Council Study Center) of the JSA.

Regular courses of the non-collaborative program are the courses on Indonesian culture and language which are initiated and regularly offered by the CIS-BIPA. The courses are intended for individuals who wish to acquaire a basic command of Indonesian, to improve and extend their command of the language, to learn Indonesia or to persue studies related to the Indonesian language and culture. In addition, they are run to meet individual or specific needs of those who wish to continue their study in Indonesia or to do research or business, and of those who have other purposes.

Non-regular courses are the courses on Indonesian culture and language learning which are run any time on demand, regardlesss of the number of the participants and the period of study, and the learning techniques. This courses is designed to cater the needs of the students specializing in particular field.

Courses on practical arts are the courses which focus on practicing and training in mastering a certain form of arts.

Courses for teachers of Indonesian as a foreign language is designed for those who are interested in becoming an Indonesian teacher for those who are interested in becoming an Indonesian teacher for non-native speakers. This courses is to provide knowledge, experience and skills for a teacher who is willing to persue their career in teaching Indonesian as a foreign language.

Regular Courses

Regular courses (collaborative and non-collaborative programs) are run three times a year, conducted as either credit or non-credit courses. A minimum of three participants for one batch are required to run a regular courses. Courses are given for 5 days a week, and 4-6 hours a day (in the total of 250 contact hours).

  1. Term 1 mid February late May
  2. Term 2 early June late August
  3. Term 3 early September mid December

Fee: US$2000/term/participant

Non-regular Courses

Non-regular courses are run any time on demand, regardless of the number of the participants. Courses are given for 4 days a week, 4-6 hours a day. A minimum of two students for one. Fees for each participant:

  1. One-week program US$ 300
  2. Two-week program US$ 600
  3. Three-week program US$ 900
  4. One-month program US$ 1.100

How is the learning process carried out ?

The learning process is cariied out through formal classroom work, peer-tutorial, field study, and remedial classes. Through these techniques, the learning activities will be geared toward (1) basic understanding of Indonesian, (2) active use of Indonesian, (3) developing fluency in using Indonesian, and (4) using Indonesian in real situations.

  1. Skill in using Indonesian is developed through activities emphasizing practice and training of using the languange
  2. Learning topics are suited to the needs and expertise of the participants
  3. Indonesian structures are presented in context in order to buid up bothfluency and accuracy
  4. The learning of Indonesian culture is carried out through lectures and practice in real life

Courses on Practical Arts Elective

This is non-reguler course on practiocal arts. All courses are taught in Indonesian by specialists in a given area or local working artists. The practical arts courses are run any time on demand, regardless of the number of the participants. To open the class will require a minimum of three students. Courses are given for 5 days a week, 4 hours a day. Some work at home is expected, and students often have to buy their own tools in order to work on their own, prices for the tools are negotiable with the instructor. The courses are offered in the fields of:

  1. Indonesian dances (mostly Javanese and Balinese dance)
  2. Woodcarving
  3. Gamelan (Javanese music)
  4. Batik
  5. Puppetry (students are not trained to become puppeteers, but are taught techniques in making puppets)

Free for each participant :

  1. One-week program USD 300
  2. Two-week program USD 600
  3. Three-week program USD 900
  4. One-month program USD 1.100

Teaching Staff

The teaching staff consist of teachers, tutors and experts in Indonesian studies. The teachers are competent and qualified, having guaranteed skill and experience in teaching Indonesian to speakers of other languages. Tutors are suited with participants, hobbies, interests, age and expectation of joining the course.

The Town of Malang

Malang is the second largest city ini East Java in both area and location. It is a well planned inland city, situated where the slopes of two groups volcanoes meet. It has a pleasant climate with temperature range of 20oC – 29oC. The city an interesting diversity in educational opportunities a rich historical and cultural heritage at pleasant for living and learning.

Nursing and Meals

CIS-BIPA will help the participants find opportunities to live families to increase fluency and competence and personally experience the life in an Indonesian family. The cost varies from US$ 100 to US$ 200, including meals times a day and laundry services.

Facilities

Participants will have full access to the facilities of State University of Malang. These include libraries, resource rooms, facilities, computer centers, etc./p>

Programs

Besides the above program, the CIS-BIPA also has a different services offered to international students of researchers. These are:

  • Enrolling of International Students

    State University of Malang is also open to International to take a degree as a regular students of State University of Malang. Registration is open twice a year. Entering test will be held in January 20 and August every year. In order to take classes, students must have Indonesian. Therefore, students are required to one full semester of intensive course in Indonesian. For available, see our web.

  • Asistance for Foreign Researchers

    We have a number of university lecturers, students, and graduates who are available to work with or to assist foreign reasearchers to do their projects in Indonesia.
    Fee: monthly contract, depending on the variety of projects and distance.

  • Asistance for Field Experience Project

    The CIS-BIPA is also able to help foreign students to run their field experience project in Indonesia. The supervisor from the CIS-BIPA will guide to choose the place and other things related to the subject matter and assistance from Indonesian experts.
    Fee: monthly contract, depending on the variety of projects and distance.

  • Sponsoring International Researchers and Students

    The CIS-BIPA can act as a partner or a host sponsor for intenational students and researchers who are research projects in Indonesia. This services is focused on paper work only.
    Fee: US$100

Just send the complete information of your identification to us and tell when will you arrive in Malang. If you need assistance for your accomodation, we will be happy to pick you up at the Juanda Airport in Surabaya.

At present the CIS-BIPA is preparing for expanding units responsible for improving east Javanese Culture in the fields of (1) dance, (2) history, (3) folklore, and (4) craftmanship.

Critical Language Scholarship (CLS)

Critical Language Scholarship is a joint program between Faculty of Letters of State University of Malang with the United States Department of State. The aims of this program are to learn Indonesian language and culture together with cultural exchange between two nations. There are 29 participants from United States joining this program today.
