Malang - Universitas Negeri Malang bestowed a doctorate honoris causa degree in the field of Arabic Language and Language Planning to Dr Abdullah Saleh Alwashmi, the Secretary-General of King Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz International Centre for the Arabic Language on Tuesday, 10 July 2018. The event took place in Graha Rektorat building (Administration building) on the 9th floor starting at 9 to 11 a.m.

This event was attended by the ambassador of Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for Indonesia, the delegate members of King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz International Arabic Service Centre, the rector of Universitas Negeri Malang, the university senate members, and representatives from all faculties.

The degree was bestowed to Dr Abdullah Saleh Alwashmi because Dr Abdullah has contributed so much towards the education in Indonesia. He initiated Arabic Month program in Indonesia and the publishment of book series about Arabic development in many parts of the world.

Dr. Abdullah Saleh Alwashmi delivered his speech about Arabic. He stated that in Arabic history, there once was a ‘time possessor’ but it is now facing a big challenge in the context of teaching. However, he added, Arabic is one of the official languages recognized by the United Nations and is spoken in official meetings. Thus, there seems to be a guarantee that its existence is not in a danger of extinction. In addition, he mentioned that the language service center was established to spread Arabic as what King Salman bin Abdul Aziz ordered. Moreover, the establishment aims to strengthen and evoke Arabic at local, regional, and national scale.

After Dr. Abdullah Saleh Alwashmi delivered his speech, it was the turn for the rector of Universitas Negeri Malang. In his speech, he momentously congratulated Dr Abdullah Saleh Alwashmi for the award.

The event was closed with all audiences congratulating Dr. Abdullah Saleh Alwashmi.
