SARS-CoV-2 vaccines: basic principles and development

University of Lausanne
Abstract:

The global pandemic of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has caused a widespread disruption on public health, the economy and society. To mitigate the effect of SARSCoV-2 pandemic, rapid action and the development of vaccines in an unprecedented timeframe are required. However, in many countries, reluctance to take the new SARS-CoV-2 vaccines and confusion on vaccine effectiveness and protection can be observed due to the lack of understanding in the mechanism and vaccine technology. In this lecture, I will provide an introductory overview of vaccines, immunization, and the underlying immunological concepts.1 Special attention will be given to the novel technologies and rapid development of vaccines against SARS-CoV-2.2
