Darmasiswa 2020/2021 Cancellation

We deeply regret to announce that the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia has decided to cancel the selection of Darmasiswa Scholarship 2020/2021 due to COVID-19 outbreak. We sincerely appreciate your time and great enthusiasm to apply for the programme at Universitas Negeri Malang (UM) this year. DARMASISWA RI is a scholarship program offered to all foreign students from countries which have diplomatic relationship with Indonesia to study Indonesian language (Bahasa Indonesia), art and culture in 70 universities in 2020/2021. This program was established in 1974 as part of ASEAN initiative, admitting only students from ASEAN. However, in 1974 this program was extended further to other countries. Until to date, the number of countries participating in this program is more than 185 countries and organized by the Ministry of Education and Culture (MoEC), Republic of Indonesia. The main purpose of DARMASISWA RI program is to promote and increase the interest in the language, art and culture of Indonesia among youth of other countries. It has also been designed to provide stronger cultural links and understanding among participating countries.

Darmasiswa RI at UM

Universitas Negeri Malang (UM) is a leading university in East Java which has been appointed by the Ministry of Education and Culture, Republic of Indonesia, to manage the Darmasiswa program since 1974. Specializing in Indonesian Language Education for the Darmasiswa program, UM has a long history of success in Teaching Indonesian for Speakers of Other Languages (BIPA) in Indonesia. Incorporating cultural education in the theoretical and practical learning of Indonesian language, UM has been receiving a lot of attentions from foreign students around the world who want to study the language and cultures of Indonesia intensively, yet in a fun way.

Darmasiswa at UM is specialized in Indonesian language study. The academic activities include learning inside and outside of the classroom with highly experienced lectures and tutors respectively. In addition, the students also have the opportunity to learn Indonesian traditional arts and culture comprising traditional dance, Gamelan, and Batik classes. Each semester, students are challenged to practice their Indonesian language by immersing in local society while exploring the beauty of Indonesia in an outing class.

Moreover, the program also offers various non-academic activities such as Culture Sharing, Indonesian Day, Malang local culture events to allow the students optimizing their learning of Indonesian culture, expanding students’ network and exchanging their culture to local students.

After finalizing the program, Darmasiswa students are expected to be the ambassador of Indonesian Language and Culture, as well as Indonesian higher education who could promote and bring the best values of Indonesian culture to their home country and the global society.

Scholarship Coverage

1. Monthly allowance IDR 2.550.000;
2. Healthy insurance;
3. Stay permit fee;
4. Accommodation and transportation during the orientation program (if the time arrival is in time with the schedule from the Ministry of Education and Culture);
5. Students will get settlement allowance (if attending orientation progam in Jakarta);
6. Students may seek assistance from the host university in finding a house/room to rent which is included in the monthly the stipend.


1.    Qualifications
A.  Foreign nationals;
B.  Completed secondary education or its equivalent;
C.  Minimum age 18 years and not older than 27 years old;
D.  Able to communicate in English (Proven by English Language Proficiency Certificate : TOEFL/TOEIC/IELTS or other certificate if (applicable);
E.  In good health as proven by Medical Certificate (medical checkup result);
F.  Have basic knowledge of the field you're applying;
G.  High interest in learning about Indonesian language, art and culture;
H.  Not registered as Darmasiswa’s Alumni;
I.  Not currently studying in Indonesia;
J.  Not currently working in Indonesia.

2.    Required Documents
A. Curriculum vitae/resume;
B. Medical statement from your local hospital or clinic (in English);
C. Degree certificate or High School diploma (in English);
D. The last academic transcript;
E. Scan of Passport in colour;
F. Passport valid at least 24 months from registration;
G. English/Indonesian language proficiency certificate (if applicable);
H. Other certificates (if applicable);
I. Recommendation letter from education / profesional institution with official letterhead and signature (in English);
J. Essay of the purpose of joining Darmasiswa (in English or Bahasa Indonesia maximum 500 words);
H. A video telling about your motivation to join Darmasiswa progam, your plan during and after the progam as a future ambassador of Indonesian culture (in English or Bahasa Indonesia with maximum duration of 2 minutes showing your full body).

3.    Procedures
A. Applicants are required to make an acount on Darmasiswa official website to register and submit;
B. Check your email and activate your account by clicking the link given by Darmasiswa in your email;
C. Login by typing you email and password;
D. First section is personal data. Upload your Photo, Passport, CV, and medical statement;
E. The second section is Indonesia Scolarship history. If you previously receive any scholarship from Indonesia, you can fill the form, if you are not skip this section;
F. The next section is Curently Studying in Indonesia, if you studied in Indonesia before, you can fill the form in this section;
G. The next section you have to fill your emergency contact information. It can be your family member in your home country, in Indonesia, or both;
H. Next, fill your last education and upload your Recommendation Letter from Education / Professional Institution, Transcript, and Last Diploma / Certificate;
I. Next section if you have other certificate / achievement related to the field you're applying. please upload it;
J. Next section you have to choose your language ability between advance, good, fair, beginner, or unable. Upload your language certificate (If applicable);
K. Next section is study section, you can choose 3 universities (the orders acquire the priority). Hence , please make sure to put Universitas Negeri Malang / State University of Malang as your first choice;
L. Upload your essay. You can copy and paste your essay from Word document or type it directly in the table (approximately 500 words);
M. Upload your video. You can upload your video or record yourself directly by click 'record video via browser' (duration max. 2 minutes);
N. Read again all your data, make sure to check it twice before you submit your data. Submit your application by clicking 'submit registration'tab.

4.    Disclaimer

A. The interview section will be conducted at Indonesian embassy or consulate in your home country;
B. Ministry of education and culture does not provide the international airfare or from Indonesia.
