Intro

The Office of International Affairs (OIA), in collaboration with the Library at Universitas Negeri Malang (UM), English Department at UM, and The Indonesian Young Academy of Science (ALMI) proudly presents the Rethinking EurAsia Lecture Series (REALS) 2024, a prestigious platform that unites thought leaders, scholars, and students from around the world to explore the critical theme of “Promoting Literacy in Global Relations.” Endowed by a generous grant from the Eurasia Foundation (from Asia), this lecture series underscores the vital role of literacy in fostering global understanding, informed decision-making, and cooperation.

Literacy is one of the most essential tools for acquiring knowledge and developing critical thinking skills. It empowers individuals to make more informed decisions, contributing to political stability and socioeconomic progress. Despite Indonesia’s challenges in promoting literacy due to its vast population and cultural diversity, significant strides have been made by the Ministry of Education, including the introduction of Emancipated Learning (Merdeka Belajar). However, the need for further improvement remains, as evidenced by Indonesia’s ranking of 62 out of 70 countries in literacy according to the 2019 PISA survey by the OECD.

REALS 2024 addresses these challenges by offering perspectives on the multidisciplinary aspects of literacy and how they can be leveraged to address global issues across Asia and Europe, with a particular focus on Indonesia. The lecture series, conducted in collaboration with the Indonesian Young Scientist Academy, invites young and influential researchers from various regions to share their insights with students from diverse academic backgrounds. The series covers a wide range of literacy topics, including reading and writing literacy, digital literacy, financial literacy, media literacy, cultural literacy, health literacy, and environmental literacy, all of which align with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The aim of the lecture series is to equip participants with intercultural and interdisciplinary communicative competence. UM believes these skills are crucial for students to thrive in an increasingly globalized environment and to navigate the overwhelming flows of information. Participants will be better prepared to contribute to the creation of more accurate and constructive images of Europe and Asia, and to critically assess the images they encounter on various platforms.
