Organised by Pusat Bahasa Mandarin Universitas Negeri Malang (PBM UM), in collaboration with OIA, the classes are open for UM students (except Chinese language major), lecturers, and staff. Due to the pandemic of Covid-19, the classes will be conducted virtually via Zoom and WhatsApp.
Chinese Language classes are divided into beginner and improvement classes. Meanwhile, the Culture classes consist of Chinese poetry, Chinese art, Chinese tourism, Chinese food, the daily life of modern Chinese, Learning Chinese by singing Chinese songs, and Learning Chinese by appreciating Chinese classical movies.

Chinese Language Class
- Beginner Class
This class is designed for students with little or no Mandarin proficiency. This class aims to introduce the basics of Mandarin.
- Improvement Class
This class is designed for students who have taken previous Mandarin classes and have mastered the basics of Mandarin. This class aims to introduce Mandarin further to the following aspects of the language: grammar, practical exercises, Chinese character structures, and daily life conversations in Chinese.
Each class consists of 12 meetings (1 meeting per week). All tutors are native speakers from China. OIA Fellas can study anywhere because this class is conducted virtually via Zoom and WhatsApp. Every year, this class gets high enthusiasm from the UM academic community.
Chinese Culture Class
- Chinese poetry
Chinese poetry is full of the author’s thoughts and feelings and rich imagination. The language is condensed and vivid, with distinctive rhythms, harmonious phonology, rich in musical beauty, and sentences are generally arranged in lines, focusing on the beauty of structure and form. Feel different cultures, feel ancient Chinese poetry and feel the beauty of Chinese characters.
2. Chinese Art
The heritage of traditional Chinese art is extremely splendid. The main representative arts are folk music, Chinese dance, tea art, traditional clothing, and so on. Chinese art has a history of thousands of years. There are many great creations. Feel the different cultures and feel the beauty of Chinese art.
3. China tourism
China is forever linked to its ancient civilization, friendly people, and many of the tourist attractions, such as The Great Wall, Terra-Cotta Warriors & Horses, and the Palace Museum. One can also find spectacular architecture and towering skylines in Shanghai and Beijing, a wealth of luxury accommodations and exquisite cuisine. Come and see why China is drawing millions of visitors from all over the world.
4. Chinese food
Due to the differences in climate, products, and customs in various parts of China, many flavors have been formed in the diet for a long time. There has always been a saying in China that “southern rice and north noodles”, the taste is divided into “sweet in the south, salty in the north, sour in the east and spicy in the west”. This course will introduce you to the different flavors of Chinese cuisine, to see how Chinese food can be so popular all over the world.
5. The daily life of modern Chinese
China is developing and rising at an amazing speed. What kind of development and change have Chinese people experienced in their lives? This course will take you to understand the daily life of Chinese people from the perspective of how they eat, dress, live, and travel in contemporary China.
6. Learning Chinese by singing Chinese songs
Have you ever been attracted by the beautiful rhythm and catchy tone of a Chinese song in Tiktok, but do not know the meaning of its lyrics? Are you interested in learning Chinese without worrying too much about the tones? Do you want to impress your Chinese friends by singing a beautiful Chinese song? If so, come and sing with us! The course is well-organized with famous modern Chinese songs that are popular among youngsters worldwide. You may acquire Chinese language points with ease and fun!
7. Learning Chinese by appreciating Chinese classical movies
If you have trouble understanding the actors’ lines in Chinese movies; if you find it hard to understand the cultural meaning behind the scene, come and learn with us! The course is well-organized with famous classical Chinese movies. The language points (grammar + vocab) are presented in a situation performed by the movie, which will certainly enable you to memorize them much easier. After taking the course, you are expected to be improved in both listening and speaking Chinese.
