Malang – The enthusiasm of One Asia Lecture Series (OALS) participant is kept on fire. Last Monday, March 25, 2019, OALS invited an exclusive lecturer, Dr. Meghan Downes to their fifth meeting. Dr. Meghan Downes is currently a research associate at the National University of Singapore’s Asia Research Institute. In this fifth lecture, Dr. Meghan Downes presented “Social Media and Sustainability: Consuming Conservation in the Age of Instagram” led by Lely Wijayanti. The lecture was held by the Office of International Affairs of Universitas Negeri Malang at the Aula Fakultas Ekonomi, the 2nd floor of E3 building and started at 01.00 p.m.
Through the lecture, Dr. Downes presented some phenomena in social media which positively and negatively affect the environment. Dr. Downes also motivated the participants to be more aware of environmental sustainability. She was also presenting some creative way to save the environment by using less plastic bags and showing some campaign of using keychain plastic bag. The lecture became more interesting when the participants were invited to participate and share their opinions in the discussion through the internet. By the end of the lecture, there was 2 session of questions and answer which made the discussion more alive. After 30 minutes of questions and answers session, Ms. Lely Wijayanti handed over a Token of Appreciation to Dr. Meghan Downes and the applause of the participants echoed throughout the hall.
